Just over half an hour away from Dickinson, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, at the Painted Canyon Visitor Center, Exit 32, Belfield, is a vast natural wonderland. The park is named after Theodore Roosevelt, who famously championed natural areas and sought to protect them. There’s a whole host of different activities that you can do at this park, including visiting the former president’s famous Maltese Cross Cabin.

The nature is unparalleled, too, including unobscured views of the North Dakota badlands and seeing prairie dogs in their natural habitat. You can do plenty of hiking in the park, or cruise on the Scenic Loop Drive to see the beautiful southern part. This protected region is just a short drive from Dickinson, but you’ll feel like you’ve entered a whole new world.


3. Little Missouri National Grassland 

Little Missouri National Grassland, at 99 23rd Avenue W. has a ranger office in Dickinson and several nearby offices dotting the badlands that make up this iconic park. If you love hiking or biking, this is truly the spot to do it. The Little Missouri National Grassland has tons of unique flora and fauna, opportunities to go horseback riding, and plenty to see and do.
