Located in the western part of the state, the city of Dickinson, ND offers plenty of nearby nature reserves where you can enjoy your favorite outdoor activities. Here are three of the best state parks you should check out while in the area.

1. Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park

Featuring a reproduction of a 400-year-old Mandan village, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is one of the most popular weekend destinations among visitors from all over North Dakota. Established in the early 20th century by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department, this public recreation area is a wonderful place to learn more about the Native American tribes that once lived in the area.

Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is located about 100 miles east of downtown Dickinson, making it possible to reach it in a little over one hour and a half via route I-94. Once you make your way here, make sure to join one of the living history tours of the area, which are offered every half-hour. Other popular activities in the park include horseback riding, fishing, and hiking.

2. Sully Creek State Park

Created in the 1970s and encompassing an area of about 65 acres, Sully Creek State Park is a beautiful public recreation area that sits on the eastern banks of the Little Missouri River and just a few miles east of the Montana state line. A popular gateway to discovering the scenery of the North Dakota badlands, this nature reserve is a top-rated destination for canoeing and kayaking during the spring months.

Driving from the Dickinson city center to Sully Creek State Park takes about 45 minutes via route I-94. Once you make your way here, some of the facilities you will find include an extensive network of horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking trails, as well as public boat ramps, a shower house, and a dump station.

3. Little Missouri State Park

Located about 55 miles north of Dickinson and not far from the confluence of the Little Missouri River and Lake Sakakawea, Little Missouri State Park is a great destination to spend a day enjoying your favorite outdoor sports. Covering almost 6,500 acres, this state park was established in the 1970s and offers great opportunities for camping, hiking, and horseback riding.
