If you’re in the Dickinson area and want to get away for the day, keep reading to learn more about our favorite day trip destinations!

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

With over 70,000-acres of parkland to explore, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is the perfect place to enjoy a day of outdoor fun. The park was named after the 26th President, “Teddy” Roosevelt, who loved ranching in the state’s Badlands. Visitors can hike one of the park’s many trails or mountains, mountain bike, and camp out under the stars. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities to observe the local wildlife like elk, bighorn sheep, and bison.

Devils Lake

The “Perch Capital of the World” is also the state’s largest naturally formed body of water. Devils lake is a popular fishing destination as it contains large numbers of walleye, northern pike, and of course, perch. If you’re not big into fishing, not to worry! There are plenty of picturesque trails to hike and gorgeous country sides to stop along and enjoy a picnic. Devils Lake provides hunting and bird watching opportunities as well.

Southwest Speedway

The thunderous roar of stock cars as they speed past you is the perfect recipe for an exciting day trip. The Southwest Speedway hosts several races per month with professional drivers vying for that top spot and prize money. There isn’t a bad seat in the house, and you can bring your outdoor seating and a picnic basket along too. There is also a variety of concession stands to buy some delicious food and drinks.

Heart River Golf Course

Golf lovers will enjoy a round at this 18-hole golf course. It’s perfectly located adjacent to the Heart River and offers stunning views from all angles. The course is a par 72 layout and offers some challenging holes for aspiring PGA champions. Lessons and a driving range are also available for anyone who wants to perfect their game.

Dickinson Museum Center

This popular museum is full of incredible exhibits that display dinosaur fossils, pioneer machinery, and more. It’s located within a 12-acre cultural park that features historic buildings, educational programs, and from time to time, special events. There are even park tours you can go on between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Check the calendar on the Museum website to see which special events are being held on certain dates.

Medora

Just west of Dickinson is the charming tourist city of Medora. It’s full of great restaurants, boutiques, and most importantly, friendly locals. Medora is the perfect place to spend the day or night, and enjoy the nightlife scene that features an array of trendy bars.
